Catalyst Wedges are handy tools useful in a variety of arts and crafts: fusible paint and powder manipulation on glass, oil and acrylic painting and textured media application, ceramics, plaster, encaustics (they’re heat-resistant)—even baking and food crafting. These wedges are made of a pliable, FDA-approved silicone that’s resistant to solvents and easy to clean. They’re manufactured by the Princeton Brush Company.

The wedge C-83 is different than the others. It’s more vertical than horizontal in shape, and comes to a sharp point, perfect for drawing fine lines through any medium. Like the other wedges, it has a soft, wider top that fits well into the palm of the hand. Its bottom third, however, is a much harder plastic that has no flex. This is the scraper, the dragger, the remover of nearly-dry paint or medium. It allows you to carve right through to lower layers of paint; just remember to be careful if you’re working on canvas—you don’t want to poke a hole in the fabric of your painting!

I demonstrate possible uses of C-83 in this video. It’s at the tail end, so if you’re pressed for time, go to 9:04 in the video to see it in use.
