Catalyst Wedges are handy tools used in a variety of arts and crafts: fusible paint and powder manipulation on glass, oil and acrylic painting and textured media application, ceramics, plaster, encaustics (they’re heat-resistant)—even baking and food crafting. These wedges are made of a pliable, FDA-approved silicone that’s resistant to solvents and easy to clean. They’re manufactured by the Princeton Brush Company.
The wedge W-01 (black) is probably the most popular wedge. It’s made of a denser, tougher silicone than the other wedges, so it’s better for scraping and lifting partially-dried paint. The wedge fits comfortably in your palm, so you can easily adjust the pressure to apply or smooth paint, clay, wax, or remove it entirely to reveal colors and textures underneath. The perfectly straight, narrow blade edge enables you to cut straight lines more accurately. The angled corner gives you an additional shorter blade for smaller areas.
I’ve done a demo of all the Catalyst Wedges in this video. If you just want to see the black wedge W-01 (and its softer fraternal wedge W-06) being used on paint, fast-forward to about 6:30 in the video.
